Destiny 2's Nightmare of Qalec: A 2026 Retrospective on Sniping a Psion

Nightmare of Qalec location: find the Sniper in the Derelict Leviathan’s Royal Pools and defeat this tanky Season of the Haunted foe.

Here's a blast from the past: in 2026, the Derelict Leviathan is a dusty memory, but once upon a Season of the Haunted (2022), Guardians were hunting Nightmares like it was a cosmic pest control gig. One particularly annoying pest was the Nightmare of Qalec, the Sniper. If you're a time traveler, a Destiny 2 historian, or someone who accidentally loaded an old build, here's the full scoop on this Psion with a grudge and a rifle. 😅

First, a quick history lesson. Qalec was a Psion who played a short but memorable role in Season of the Chosen. After Caiatl's Chosen got clobbered in the Rite of Proving, humanity and the Cabal Empire signed a treaty. Qalec, however, decided to celebrate by conspiring with another Psion named Valir to assassinate Zavala. Rude. Qalec used his sniper rifle to disable the Ghost of the unaware Vanguard Commander. The fatal shot was thwarted by Crow, and Caiatl killed both traitors. Later, Emperor Calus revived Qalec as a Nightmare, because Calus has a weird hobby of turning bad memories into haunted target practice.

Fast forward to Season of the Haunted. The Nightmare of Qalec lurked in the Royal Pools on the Derelict Leviathan, specifically in a Haunted Alcove inside a corrupted passage at the back right corner of the area. If you had the second upgrade from the Crown of Sorrow under the Manifesting tree, the chest inside had a chance to drop Opulent energy. Qalec spawned on a timer and took his sweet time respawning after defeat. If he wasn't there, Guardians could reload the map. A helpful message above their abilities would say, 'A red laser briefly passes by your Ghost.' That was the cue to follow the passage and meet the Psion face-to-face.

Now, the fight itself. Before reaching Qalec, players had to fight lesser Nightmare enemies that dropped Unstable Essence. Collecting this material granted a damage buff against Nightmares. Throughout the fight, enemies would repeatedly spawn, supplying a steady stream of Unstable Essence. Qalec was not particularly tough, but he was tanky enough to require some effort. Using Osteo Striga was excellent for quickly dispatching the excess foes and whittling down Qalec's health with the weapon's poison. The Psion was basically a bullet sponge with a sniper rifle and a bad attitude.

Quick Fact Detail
🎯 Target Nightmare of Qalec, the Sniper
📍 Location Royal Pools, Derelict Leviathan, Haunted Alcove (back right corner)
🧪 Key Item Unstable Essence (damage buff)
🔫 Recommended Weapon Osteo Striga (poison go brrr)
🏆 Reward Drainage Triumph + Haunted Alcove chest
⏳ Respawn Timer-based; reload map if missing

Once defeated, players received the completion of the Drainage Triumph and a Haunted Alcove chest. There was no respawn restriction, so struggling Guardians could try multiple times. Qalec was only one of many Nightmares hidden throughout the Derelict Leviathan, and Guardians had to stay vigilant to find them all.

But here's the 2026 reality check: the Derelict Leviathan is no longer in Destiny 2, and Season of the Haunted is a distant memory. So this guide is mostly for archival purposes, nostalgic lore nerds, or anyone who wants to know why a Psion with a sniper rifle is still haunting their dreams. If you're playing current Destiny 2 in 2026, you won't find Qalec lurking in the Royal Pools. But you can still appreciate the absurdity of a villain who got killed by his own empress, then resurrected by a guy who talks to his own reflection. 😂

In short: Qalec was a jerk, his Nightmare was a tanky jerk, and Osteo Striga was the answer. Stay haunted, Guardians.
